正法眼蔵 行持 （ ６８ ）
しづかに二十年中の消息おもひやるべし
わするる時なかれ
たとひ参潙山道 san-izando する人ありとも
不参潙山道 fu san-izando の行持はまれなるべし
寒山拾得 kanzan-zitoku は
潙山霊祐 Izan-Reiyu ( 771～853 ) 禅師を見て,こう述べられました
この人は、１５００人の修行者の指導者になるだろう
Kanzan-zitoku, a Buddhist priest, looked at Zen Master Yizan Reiyu
and said , This man will be the leader of 1,500 ascetic monks
その後、潙山 Izan 禅師が４０歳を過ぎて
実際新しい道場開設の任に当たることとなります
しかし、修行僧は集まらず２０年の月日が流れました
Later, when Zen Master Izan passed the age of 40
He was appointed to open a new dojo.
However, the ascetic monks did not gather and 20 years passed.
潙山 Izan 禅師も、これを補佐した長慶大安禅師も
道場の隆盛とは別の任務を帯びていました
このほんとうの任務とは、
己が宿している猛牛を放って、天に返してあげることでした

to release the raging bull that was in his possession and return it to the heavens
